Born in Fulda, Germany, Martina Theisen studied communications design in Mainz. She spent many years working for the television company, SWR Mainz. Now she works as a designer and illustrator. In ancient Greece, the inhabitants of the Aegean islands and the northwest coast of Asia Minor were called "Eolia". Eolia is a family of sans serif fonts that combine grotesque style with certain geometric characteristics. PT Telingater Display™ was designed in 1959 by a well-known Soviet book designer Solomon Telingater (1903-1969) at Polygraphmash type design bureau. The typeface was awarded the Silver Medal at the International Book Art Exhibition (IBA-59) at Leipzig (Germany) in 1959. The font Wappenstein was inspired by the carving on a memorial stone located in Paderborn, Germany. The stone was an Epitaph of the Brenkener family, and the carver is known as the “Meister des Brenkener Familienepitaphs”. The carving, dating to 1562, currently is curated by the Erzbischöfliches Diözesanmuseum in the city of Paderborn and was originally in the Brenkener Pfarr Kirche. A Wappenstein is a stone that contains a carving of the heraldic achievement of a person.

Precursors to Torrone, the fonts are found among the type experiments of Art Deco artists in 1930’s Europe. Herr Pfister was a printer in the city of Bamberg Bavaria. He is known to have published nine works. And it has been contentiously argued that he printed the “36 line Bible.” He was responsible for two innovations. The first was printing in his native German language and the second was the use of woodblock prints to add illustrations to the text. These were both first with the use of movable type. He was heavily influenced by Gutenberg’s typefaces but there are a range of notable and also subtle differences between the two men’s output. He was known to be active in the industry from about 1460 to his death in 1466. This font was specifically based on his "Biblia Paperum."

Of all student work produced in Joost Schmidt?s Bauhaus classes, Reinhold Rossig?s (1903?1979) alphabet designs are perhaps closest to his master?s teachings: monolinear, geometric lettering, constructed on grids using compass and ruler. Drafts by Rossig, dated 1929, also demonstrate explorations of letterform width and x-height. Almost ninety years later, Elia Preuss carefully preserves Rossig?s letters and considerations in a proper typeface, by overcoming most of the optical mistakes captured in true geometric letterforms. To carry Rossig?s design further away from Schmidt?s influence, Preuss also lent more characteristic letters found on poster designs by fellow Bauhaus student Hermann Werner Kubsch. Reross is a true Bauhaus-influenced geometric sans, equipped with different historic influences and contemporary features.

The other day, I was thinking how time flies and how my kids grow up so fast. In the blink of an eye, they had turned from babies into almost-teenagers. They're not teenagers yet, but given their tantrums, it does feel like I have three teenagers in the house... ;-) Ogenblik, in Dutch, means: ‘in the blink of an eye’, ‘lightning fast’, or ‘for a brief moment’. It’s similar to the German ‘Augenblick’, which means exactly the same. Ogenblik was made with the same dried out marker pen that helped me create my font Castlerigg. I guess it had more than one extra font in it! Ogenblik is a bit of a grungy, yet quite legible and neat font. Comes with multilingual support.

The Face2Face (F2F) series was inspired by the techno sound of the mid-1990s, personal computers and new font creation software. For years, Sibylle Schlaich and her friends formed a unique type design collective, which churned out a substantial amount of fresh, new fonts, none of which complied with the traditional rules of typography. Many of these typefaces were used to create layouts for the leading German techno magazine of the 1990s, Frontpage. Schlaich and her fellows would even set in type at 6 points, in order to make it nearly unreadable. It was a pleasure for the kids to read and decrypt these messages! The German typeface artist Lucian Bernhard designed Bernhard Antiqua as the first of his many text typefaces. The first weights were produced in 1912 by the foundry Flinsch in Frankfurt am Main.
